The Traffic Control Series is for use in training of traffic engineers and highway maintenance personnel. It includes an Overview of Worldwide Traffic Sign Systems, Markings and Island Traffic Controls for Schools, Railroad Crossings, Bicycle Facilities, Special Use Traffic Controls, Traffic Control Signals at Intersections, Traffic Sign Placement and Location, and Traffic Sign Inspection and Maintenance.
Module 1 - 26 Minutes
Worldwide Traffic Sign Systems Overview
The purpose of this videotape is to familiarize viewers with the three roadway sign systems, U.S., European, Latin American, in use around the world. The information presented in the tape represents general comparisons between sign systems, and is useful for traffic engineering personnel.
Module 2 - 19 Minutes
Markings and Islands
Markings and Islands have separate purposes. Markings convey certain regulations, warnings and other information without diverting a driver's attention from the roadway. Islands are areas between traffic lanes that control vehicle movement or provide pedestrian refuge. This videotape covers the design and application of both devices. The information in this tape is based on the U.S. Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Services.
Module 3 - 24 Minutes
Traffic Controls For Schools/Railroad
Crossings/Bicycle Facilities This program covers traffic controls under three traffic control conditions requiring extra safety considerations: schools areas, railroad crossings, and bicycle facilities. Each is unique situations for drivers and other users of highways and is presented in detail in the videotape.
Module 4 - 17 Minutes
Special Use Traffic Controls
This videotape covers special use traffic control devices. These devices address potentially hazardous traffic conditions that are not covered elsewhere in the traffic control series. They include hazard identification or speed bacons, lane)use control signals, pedestrian signals, high occupancy vehicle facilities, changeable message signs, movable concrete barriers, and a variety of other miscellaneous devices.
Module 5 - 18 Minutes
Traffic Control Signals at Intersections
Traffic Control signals are power-operated devices that direct traffic alternately at intersections. They assign the right-of-way to each intersecting street in an efficient manner. This videotape describes basically how engineers determine if a signal is needed, how signal controller phasing works, and how signal timing works. Signal controller phasing for four-legged intersection, five-legged intersection, and four-legged intersection with left-turn lanes are discussed.
Module 6 - 22 Minutes
Traffic Sign Placement and Location
The placement and location of traffic signs are discussed in this videotape. Three specific roadways: urban, rural and freeways are included in the presentation.
Module 7 - 21 Minutes
Traffic Sign Inspection and Maintenance
Inspection and maintenance of traffic signs are crucial to insuring a high level of public safety. Poorly maintained signs can effect safety, traffic operations and can cause severe liability problems. This videotape covers sign maintenance facilities, field equipment and materials, discusses how to measure whether signs are performing at the proper level, and describes a sign inventory system and an inspection program.
