This series of two videotapes deals with setting the maintenance priorities for low-volume roads and managing the maintenance for low-volume roads.
Module 1 - 20 Minutes
Setting Maintenance Priorities for Low-Volume Roads
The purposes of road maintenance is: (1) to reduce the rate of deterioration and increase life of roads; (2) to reduce vehicle operating costs by providing good riding surfaces; and (3) to keep roads open all year round. These are discussed clearly in the tape. Setting priorities for low-volume roads is a unique process and is shown in detail. The first step is to establish the extent of the total maintenance requirement by inspecting road conditions. Then do a traffic count to get traffic volume on each road. A recommended simple road maintenance classification based on traffic can be used; the work can be grouped under routine, periodic and emergency. Finally develop a work plan with maintenance tasks in order of priority.
Module 2 - 19 Minutes
Managing Maintenance for Low-Volume Roads
This course presents background details on the types of roads, typical problems, engineering properties and typical maintenance activities associated with low)volume roads. It also covers recommended procedures for developing and implementing simplified procedures for managing maintenance on low-volume unpaved roads including road and bridge inventory, work planning, labor and equipment programming, budgeting, scheduling and work monitoring and control.
