Introduction
Low-volume roads, farm-to-market access roads and roads connecting rural communities play a significant role in many countries' economies. They are necessary to serve the public in rural areas, improve the flow of goods and services help achieve development, public health and education goals.At the same time, rural roads are particularly vulnerable to soil conditions and surface water drainage that can quickly degrade their usability, cause structural failures and result in adverse impacts on the local environment, water quality, and aquatic life. Good rural road design and construction practices are cost effective in the long run by preventing failures, eliminating repair needs, andreducing maintenance.
Addressed primarily at civil engineers, road managers and resource specialists involved in the design and maintenance of rural roads, this seminar will provide key best practices and international case studies across a range of topics affecting low-volume roads.
Lead Course Instructor: Gordon R. Keller, P.E, GE
Gordon Keller has worked extensively with low-volume roads, their design issues, and road storm damage repairs. Over the past 20 years he has done a large amount of training and consulting on rural roads design, engineering best practices, and ways to mitigate environmental damage. He is the author of numerous papers on various aspects of Geotechnical Engineering, Minimum Impact Low-Volume Roads Design and Roads Engineering Best Management Practices. He is an active member of the Transportation Research Board, Low-Volume Roads Committee

Guest Speaker: Alan Kercher, P.E., President, Kercher Engineering
Alan Kercher has had more than 27 years of experience as a graduate engineer in the Civil and Structural Engineering fields working on projects rangng from the design of roads, bridges, buildings and retaining structures to the preparation of contract documents and providing contract administration for a wide variety of municipal projects including pavement maintenance and rehabilitation, community parks and drainage improvement projects.
Guest Speaker: Ben Gericke, Program Team Leader, Europe and Central Asia Sustainable Development, The World Bank
Ben Gericke is recognized internationally for his road reform and implementation management experience. His professional experience in many countries includes infrastructure and asset management, restructuring of road management functions, road reform implementation and efficiency improvements within road agencies. He has a strong project implementation background and was a guest lecturer at several international training programs organized by the International Road Federation, University of Birmingham and SWEROAD.
