Late last week, The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee released their summary for a new six-year transportation authorization bill. The blueprint of the bill, called the Surface Transportation Authorization Act of 2009, gave a dire assessment of the current state of transportation in the United States. It said almost 61,000 miles, or 37%, of the National Highway System are in poor or fair condition, and more than one of every four U.S. bridges is rated structurally deficient or functionally obsolete.
