Institute of Road Traffic Education (IRTE)

Institute of Road Traffic Education (IRTE), a non-profit organization, was formed in December 1991 byninterdisciplinary group of members including educationists, doctors, journalists, engineers, ex-servicemen, architects, and automobile experts and members of the police etc. with a single aim to make the Indian roads safer for those who use them.

Since its inception, IRTE has been incessantly working towards developing a positive road user culture in the country. IRTE's journey since 1991 has dwelt upon catalyzing development of infrastructure in the fields of traffic engineering, traffic enforcement, collision investigation and analysis, driver training and testing systems, public participation and road safety education. IRTE is working towards its objectives in close association with various stakeholders including several corporate citizens, individuals and institutions, national and state governments and undertakes diverse programmes and activities around the year, which include:

  • Development of innovative traffic enforcement technology

  • Introduction of voluntary schemes for public participation in traffic management

  • Imparting traffic education through various programmes aimed at different target groups like villagers, school children, pedestrians etc.

  • Imparting training to traffic police personnel Research & development in the area of collision investigation and analysis l Undertaking research on various facets of traffic and transportation

  • Traffic Engineering and Road Safety Audit

  • Conducting workshops, seminars, conferences, debates and discussions on matters concerning road safety management

  • Creating standardized driver-training tools & systems as well as conducting driver training and assessment courses.

As a result of its several successful programs towards enhancing road safety in India, IRTE has been conferred with the National Road Safety Award for the year 2000-2001, instituted by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, Government of India.

IRTE also became the first organization outside the United Kingdom to be conferred with the coveted Prince Michael International Road Safety Award in December 2001 Through its President, Mr. Rohit Baluja, IRTE has been a member of National Road Safety Council

In view of the outstanding work undertaken by him in the field of road safety in India, IRTE President, Mr. Rohit Baluja was elected as a Fellow of Ashoka, the Global Association of Leading Social Entrepreneurs. In recognition of his dedication and commitment to improving road safety in India and sharing good practice with other developing countries, Mr. Rohit Baluja became the first person to be presented with the Royal Society for Prevention of Accidents Distinguished Service Award for Road Safety. The Award was presented by Lord Faulkner of Worcester at Blackpool, England in 2003.
