Standards and Specs
Road standards and specifications are very critical for the safe and efficient transportation of people and goods. By setting minimum standards and providing guidance, IRF works with national road associations, public road agencies, and the private sector to ensure best practices are followed when developing any road standards.
Uniform standards ensure an efficient and safe road infrastructure. For example, the use of uniform Traffic Control Devices (TCDs) (messages, location, size, shapes, and colors) helps reduce crashes and congestion, and improves the efficiency of the surface transportation system. Uniformity also helps reduce the cost of TCDs through standardization. Specifications for asphalt and concrete material ensure our roads are smooth and durable.
Each country is unique and as such has unique needs. There is no one size fits all solution when it comes to applying standards and specifications. IRF works to provide guidance and encourages innovation and flexibility while maintaining uniformity.
